Just Do It!

world-aids-dayI’m not talking about the Nike swoosh. It’s World AIDS Day. Get tested!

Your healthcare can do it. A neighborhood clinic, community health centers, hospital, Planned Parenthood, CBOs or even a mobile testing van. Or use this locator tool. Just get it done so that you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

World AIDS Day

image

We are still battling an epidemic, here and across the globe. HIV and AIDS still has no cure and continues to leave motherless children, childless mothers and shattered families. Here, the CDC just released new research and although some numbers are flattening, our youth are in crisis. So what are you going to do this Saturday? I have a few ideas.

1) Blog, tweet, share about HIV and AIDS. Connect to testing resources, talk about safe sex or pose a question and request comments.

2) Get tested. If you don’t know your status, you’re part of the problem.

3) Get educated. Thete is still too much misinformation out there. If you’re ignorant about the facts, you’re part of the problem.

4) Talk about it. At school, at church, at home. I get it- it’s hard and uncomfortable. Guess what’s harder? Losing a loved one or having an altered quality of life.

5) Avoid risky behavior. Know your syatus, have safe sex, no sharing needles, be careful at the tattoo parlor!!! [Although you get a new disposable needle, blood can be present in the gun and ink; the virus can survive if not exposed to air and at room temp.]

6) Protect yourself and loved ones. If you do all of the above, this one is automatic.

Young and Dumb

image

As we approach World AIDS Day (Dec. 1), disturbing news. Today, CDC released new stats regarding HIV and young people.

Youth ages 13-24 account for 26 percent of new infections AND there is higher incidence among Black and gay young men.

This tells me two things: 1) We as parents, guardians, mentors and health professionals are failing; 2) Young people are hard-headed as hell! What are we going to do about it?!? A generation will get decimated at this rate! People, we need to talk about sex, not just have it. Adults: it’s time to talk to the young people in your life- the stakes are too high. Silence is not working.

I challenge all of you following or reading my blog to repost, share or have/start a discussion…please.

When my daughter gets home tonight, it’s time for another sex and STD talk (we haven’t had one in a while, too long).
