Don’t push me cuz I’m close to the edge, I’m tryin’ not to lose my head! A-huh-huh-huh-huh…it’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under.
Growing up I was a HUGE fan of rap. I still can’t make myself call it hip hop; it feel ingenuine to me, manufactured. Anyway, in many ways rap was the soundtrack to my life, as well as many of my friends’. I hear a song and pictures are brought forth with HD clarity. Yesterday Rollingstone released its Top 50 Hip Hop Songs of All Time. I haven’t been through the entire list, but like the layout and appreciate the methodology (they asked rap artists which songs were top for them and did the math). There is an intro by ?uestlove and great graphics. Below are the Top Ten.
1. The Message
2. Rapper’s Delight
3. Planet Rock
4. Sucker MCs
5. My Mind Playing Tricks On Me
6. Nuthin’ But a G Thang
7. Fight the Power
8. Juicy
9. Straight Outta Compton
10. Paid in Full
For the top 10, I would contest a few: numbers 3, 5 & 8. This is for all time! I’m not disputing the greatness of the songs, but I think there must be others to pick. For instance, I would keep Biggie, just a different song…I also wonder about the absence of Tupaq in the first ten…
But check it out, it’s worth the read. Hits the stands tomorrow.
