A Damascus High School student, a 15 year-old girl, sat quietly during the pledge of allegiance, to show her discontent with US policy in Puerto Rico. She is currently being defended by the Maryland ACLU, though I am unsure why she needs a defense.
This tenth-grader is following a long tradition of political dissent in this country, the tenet upon which it was built. Young people “sitting in” changed the history that she learns in class…isn’t that the greatest testament that she understands her rights as they were bestowed?
