Thinking Of a Masterplan…

The Constitution should be “colorblind” in a nation that is colorstruck? SCOTUS strikes again.

When my daughter told me on Friday about the court’s decision regarding affirmative action, I didn’t blink. I was not surprised, nor should anyone else be surprised. This court has a masterplan: to make America great again (although it never has been).

I don’t know the details of other universities’ admissions processes. When I read the overview of Harvard’s and UNC’s, I didn’t see the problem. It seemed to me that race was kept in mind rather than being excluded, but then again, I guess my viewpoint is colored (pun intended).

Two Harvard students console one another once the ruling was made.

I read a few analyses of the opinion, and they all discussed the merits of removing race as a consideration from the admissions process. But race has and always will be a consideration. That’s why the affirmative action was adopted in the first place! If the US would affirm opportunity equitably, this would be a moot point.

Applications of Black and Brown applicants were routinely tossed in the circular file and every student class across the country was homogeneous except at HBCUs and tribal schools. Further, I have no doubt that when possible, admissions officers still find ways to exclude “diverse” candidates.

But I digress… as I mentioned earlier, I was not surprised. If you are different (non-white, female, LGBTQi+) in the US, things are going to look different for you, or perhaps just worse. There is a plan afoot. I hope you’re paying attention.

PS: The fact that the group that sued Harvard and UNC did so based on civil rights law is disturbing.

PPS: What is really disgusting is that Clarence Thomas, whose career continually benefitted from Affirmative Action, wrote a 58-page opinion on the reasoning for the ruling. And he is always outspoken about it. He wrote that both policies “fly in the face of our colorblind Constitution and our nation’s equality ideal.” WOW. Thurgood Marshall and RBG are looking down, heartbroken.
