Origin

Official movie poster.

I want to see this movie sooooo badly! And I doubt that it’s coming to Costa Rica.

It is based on the book Caste: The Origins of our Discontents by Pulitzer Prize winner, Isabelle Wilkerson, and directed by Ava Duvernay. I am a fan of Duvernay’s gift for storytelling and her ability to make you think and see a different perspective. The movie stars Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as the author, Wilkerson.

Beyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people’s lives and behavior and the nation’s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people—including Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others—she shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day.

I have seen countless videos posted from people who have just come from the movie. They are emotional, stunned, almost speechless. I want to know why.

If you have an opportunity, go see this film. It is in US theaters now. You can even gift a seat to a young person or educator via the Seat 16 project.

I don’t know if it will be released globally; the film has support and publicity mostly, if not all, through grassroots efforts. It seems like this is a time in the world’s history to go and see this.

If you go see it, share your thoughts with others. Come back and post a comment if you feel so moved.
