NBA vet Jason Collins announced that he is gay. He is the first active player to be public about his homosexuality…he is surely not the only one.

I applaud his courage and his willingness to be who he is. I think he is safe given the level of support he is sure to receive from the public. He is untouchable, at least publicly, by the Association and other players- they do not want that kind of press. It was only a matter of time…

This issue was covered a few months ago by an episode of Necessary Roughness, a great show that I seldom get to catch. The cable show chronicles a shrink that works with a fictional, pro football franchise. In said episode, the doctor encourages the quarterback to “come out.”
